In the wake of a November “60 Minutes” segment that negatively portrayed horse racing, another unfavorable television project is currently in development. It will be available for streaming on Hulu at an undisclosed time in the upcoming year.

WHAT ABOUT THE NEW YORK TIMES PRESENTS: BROKEN?

In “Broken Horses,” the fundamental problems, dubious tactics, and demanding reforms that have rocked the horse racing industry are examined. Before the 2023 Kentucky Derby got off on the first Saturday in May, the best racehorses in the world arrived at Louisville’s storied Churchill Downs, but seven of them had already passed away.

After that, five more people passed away. Deaths on the track at the two other highlights of the sport’s Triple Crown series, the Preakness in May and the Belmont in June, also shocked onlookers and increased pressure on racing authorities to address the issue.

Investigated by New York Times reporters Joe Drape, Melissa Hoppert, Rachel Abrams, and Liz Day is the terrible period that threw the sport into disarray and left fans wondering why so many horses, supposedly in perfect physical condition, are breaking down so frequently.

“Broken Horses” offers a detailed look at the political and commercial forces that dominate the Sport of Kings and oppose policies that could reduce the number of horses that die on the road.

It does this via the use of private records, classified documents, and exclusive interviews. It tells the tale of careless breeding and doping, dishonest vets and trainers, and spectators who are captivated by the beauty and pomp of the sport but growingly unsure of how long its social license will last for one of the nation’s oldest sports.
