The Big Cigar, a forthcoming biographical thriller film starring Selma’s André Holland as Black Panther founder Huey P. Newton, will premiere on Apple TV+ on April 7. The first two episodes of the miniseries are slated to premiere on May 17 and will be followed by new episodes every Friday until June 14.
Newton, a well-known African American activist, and Bobby Seale co-founded the Black Panther Party (BPP) in Oakland, California, in 1966. The BPP developed into a Marxist organization that supported Black liberation while battling police brutality and offering social assistance.
Throughout his life, Newton—who holds a Ph.D. in social philosophy—faced controversy and legal problems. Notwithstanding the obstacles, his contributions continue to play a vital role in the history of the civil rights struggle. He sadly lost his life in an Oakland crime related to drug conflicts, leaving behind a complicated legacy of fighting for community support and racial justice.
