Prior to House of the Dragon returning to television this summer, FX’s 10-episode limited series Shogun, which will debut on Hulu in February, will take viewers back to 17th-century Japan. PLOT OF THE SHOGUN SEASON 1:
According to the official IMDB synopsis, the series is set in the 17th century and follows the journey of John Blackthorne, a sailor who becomes a samurai while serving as a pawn in Japanese warlord Toranaga’s quest to become the Shogun of the ruling class.
A world of politics and history involving rival Japan, the Catholic Church, the Spanish and Portuguese Empires, and the crew is placed upon the Pilot, Blackthorne. Blackthorne can only successfully negotiate Yoshi Toranaga’s perilous waters for financial gain with the assistance of one very stunning woman.
CAST AND CREW OF THE SHOGUN SEASON 1:
Ten episodes featuring Tokuma Nishioka as Toda Hiromatsu, Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, Moeka Hoshi as Usami Fuji, Hiroyuki Sanada as Yoshii Toranaga, Anna Sawai as Lady Mariko, and Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne, in addition to Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige.
The series, which is set in the 17th century, has an impressive cast and staff, including Hiroyuki Sananda as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and Anna Sawai as a mediator, while her father John Backthorne is left stranded. The remaining cast members are Mocka Hoshi, Tokuma Nishioka, Takehiro Hira, Tadanobu Asano, and Hiroto Kanai.
Executive producers of the series were Michael De Luca, Edward L. McDonnell, Michaela Clavell, and Rachel Kondo. The show was created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks.
TRAILER DETAILS OF THE SHOGUN SEASON 1:
In November, a teaser trailer was released, showcasing the series’ mood and several action scenes with no dialogue. The same month, a full trailer was released, with additional dialogue but still very little information about the plot.
Two fresh teasers for the show were released in January. Less is revealed in the first, a teaser, than in the previous two releases from last fall. The other, a red-band teaser, reveals that this will be a sexy and violent show with some very explicit nudity, a rather gruesome decapitation, and people getting destroyed by a canon.
RELEASE DATE OF THE SHOGUN SEASON 1:
On Tuesday, February 27, Hulu will debut the first two of Shogun’s ten episodes. The specific airtime for the series’ cable television debut on the FX channel has not yet been disclosed. Weekly releases of new episodes are planned.
