Sherri Papini’s disappearance on November 2, 2016, has sparked speculation regarding her fate. Three weeks later, on Thanksgiving, she emerged and told police that two Hispanic women had kidnapped her. She claimed it happened on the running track that morning. However, after conducting a thorough investigation, investigators discovered that Papini’s kidnapping was a fabrication.

SHERRI PAPINI: WHY DID SHE FAKE HER KIDNAPPING?

According to NBC News, when investigating what happened to Sherri Papini, detectives discovered male DNA evidence. They discovered this evidence on Papini’s clothes, which led them to her ex-boyfriend. 

While Papini claimed to have been kidnapped, the inquiry showed that she was actually residing with her ex-boyfriend in his Costa Mesa, California home. She was married to Keith Papini at the time, and they had children.

According to People Magazine, Papini requested her ex-boyfriend to purposefully injure her. She intended to make it appear as if the kidnappers had tortured her while holding her captive. The ex-boyfriend claimed police he refused to beat Papini. 

He claimed he held a hockey stick for her to run into. He also admitted to pelting her with hockey pucks. Then, three weeks later, the ex-boyfriend abandoned her along Interstate 5 so she could get home. He was never charged in the case.

Sherri Papini’s fate remained unknown for years as she faced accusations for the scam. After returning home, she continued to live with her husband, Keith, and their children. More than five years later, officials arrested her, and Keith learned the truth about the alleged kidnapping. 

Papini received a 35-count federal indictment and pleaded guilty to two of them in April 2022. The allegations included mail fraud and lying to a law enforcement official. Sherri Papini received an 18-month jail sentence. The court also ordered that she pay $300,000 in restitution. Papini never acknowledged to faking her kidnapping, and the allegations derived from the lies she told later.
