Glassriver in Iceland is getting ready to film the second season of the popular drama Black Sands, which is being handled by showrunner Baldvin Z.
Returning as partners for the second season are Finland’s YLE, Belgium’s VRT and Lunanime, Belgium’s Channel 2, and All3Media, which manages foreign rights.
Viaplay, which has rights to the show in several European countries and the US (where it premiered on July 20), Alibi for the UK, Disney+ for the Netherlands and Luxembourg, Canal+ for Poland, SBS for Australia, AXN Mystery Channel for Japan, Pumpkin Film for China, and Upstream Media for the Philippines were among the many companies that purchased the first season.
Baldvin Z, Ragnar Jónsson, and Aldís Amah Hamilton are the show’s writers; Elías Kofoed Hansen has since joined them. Produced by Arnbjörg Hafliðadóttir, the eight-part dark romantic crime drama will begin filming in August.T.

In this character-driven tale, Aldís Amah Hamilton plays a police officer who is investigating a string of unexplained deaths in her hometown on Iceland’s south coast, forcing her to face her past. She will be followed in the second season as she battles postpartum depression while caring for her little baby.
“The second part of Black Sands picks up right where season one ended,” says Baldvin Z. The first episode of the new season feels less like episode one and more like episode nine. For this reason, we would rather refer to it as “part two” rather than “series two.”
“We have found it extremely important to be able to portray the brutal realism of what police officers have to deal with in their everyday duties,” he continued. “Our collaboration with Ragnar Jónsson, one of the show’s creators and who also worked on Black Sands season one, has greatly benefited the scripts.
“One of the top forensic investigators in the nation, Ragnar was a bloodstain pattern specialist with the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police department… ”

In addition to directing four episodes, Baldvin Z directed the whole first season. For the second season, Álfheiður Marta Kjartansdóttir (the first AD on the first series and a collaborator on The Minister) and Erlendur Sveinsson (the winner of an award for his short Kanari) are directing two episodes each.
Halldóra Geirhardsdóttir, whose credits include Woman At War, Sólveig Arnarsdóttir, Ólafí Hrönn, and Erla Ruth, is joining the cast of season two.
Baldvin Z has clarified that Black Sands’ second season will serve as its conclusion. “I really wanted to do the second season because we did map out the entire story in the beginning,” he said to Screen.
It had the feel of an incomplete task. particularly since it concludes with telling a significant tale that is infrequently told in TV series like Black Sands.
