Feel sorry for performers that have to remember eight million plot points, like Robert Downey Jr. and Hoa Xuande of the new HBO series The Sympathiser. Xuande portrays the role of Captain, a North Vietnamese agent operating in South Vietnam before being forced to go to America to provide consulting services for a Vietnam War film.
Too much to keep straight, isn’t it? Downey portrays four different antagonists in the interim. Oh my! Released on February 15, the second teaser features Xuande sporting an array of wigs. I adore the platinum blonde hairstyle.

A year before the April 14, 2024, premiere, the first teaser was released back on April 12, 2023. Concurrently available on Max, the episodes will occupy the much sought-after Sunday night slot. The Sympathiser, which is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is co-showrun by Don McKellar (The Drowsy Chaperon) and Park Chan-wook (Decision to Leave).
Oldboy fans will notice that Park Chan-wook is highly skilled at telling stories that make your eyes pop out of your head. Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen, and Sandra Oh are among the other cast members. Prepare to commit a great deal of names but not so much faces to memory.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, the limited series is a blend of satire and spy thriller. It chronicles the last days of the Vietnam War and the life of Captain (Hoa Xuande), a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy, as he flees to Los Angeles and discovers that his spying days are far from finished.
With an April 14 start date, the seventh and last episode will air on May 26, only a few days before the 2024 Emmy qualifying window closes.
The Sympathiser, a co-production of HBO, A24, and Rhombus Media, in collaboration with Moho Film and Cinetic Media, was ordered to series in July 2021. Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) and Don McKellar (Sensitive Skin, Last Night) co-showrun the series; Park also directed the first three episodes.
The cast of the show also includes Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, Sandra Oh, and Robert Downey Jr., who serves as both an executive producer and an actor in a number of supporting parts.
