The Long Shadow, a true crime drama from Sundance Now, will now have an updated release date. Perhaps because a graphic story of serial killing isn’t exactly what most people would consider ideal holiday fodder, the series, which was first planned to debut on the streamer last November, was abruptly delayed late last fall.
Thank goodness, the highly anticipated drama will finally be premiering in March and will probably expose many American viewers to the notorious Yorkshire Ripper, a serial killer from the 1970s.
The five-year search for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, who was found guilty of killing thirteen women and attempting to kill seven more between 1975 and 1980, is the subject of the television series.
Naturally, Sutcliffe’s alias, Yorkshire Ripper, pays homage to the well-known Jack the Ripper and captures his comparable persecution of underprivileged and disenfranchised women, especially those employed in high-crime areas and whose disappearances and deaths were more likely to go unnoticed by the press.
After being apprehended in 1981, he was given twenty consecutive life sentences. Eventually, in 2010, they were changed to a full life order, which is a life sentence without the chance of parole or conditional release.
PLOT OF THE LONG SHADOW SEASON 2:
Follow the victim and survivors of the notorious serial killer, the “Yorkshire Ripper,” as you go back to the 1970s and 1980s. The story begins in October 1975 when Wilma McCann, a mother of four, is found killed close to her home. A desperate game of cat and mouse then starts.
Toby Jones (The Wonder) plays DCS Dennis Hoban in The Long Shadow, which is based on Michael Bilton’s highly acclaimed novel Wicked Beyond Belief: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. Hoban oversaw the investigation until his untimely death in 1978.
DCS George Oldfield, who was notoriously accused of mismanaging the investigation in numerous ways, is portrayed by David Morrissey (The Missing), while Lee Ingleby (The Serpent Queen) plays DCS Jim Hobson, who eventually took over from Oldfield.

The cast of the show consists of the following: Shaun Dooley as Grantchester; Katherine Kelly as Happy Valley; Daniel Mays as Magpie Murders; Liz White as Call the Midwife; Jill Halfpenny as Everything I Know About Love; Daisy Waterstone as Dalgliesh; Jasmine Lee-Jones as Dead Pixels; Molly Wright as The A Word; Alexa Davies as COBRA; Chloe Harris as Nolly; Stephen Tompkinson as DCI Banks; Jack Deam as Father Brown; Michael McElhatton as Game of Thrones; and Mark Stobbart as Line of Duty.
George Kay and Lewis Arnold, who are also executive producers, wrote the screenplay and directed The Long Shadow. Additionally involved are executive producers Elaine Pyke (Dalgliesh) and Willow Grylls (Des). Sarah Lewis (Victoria) joins producer Matt Sandford (Des) as the series producer. The series is produced by New Pictures.
RELEASE DATE OF THE LONG SHADOW SEASON 2:
On Sunday, March 21, Sundance Now and AMC+ will debut The Long Shadow with two episodes. Weekly installments will air through April 25, 2024.
