The books, which are set in Tudor England in the sixteenth century, centre on a man by the name of Matthew Shardlake who works as a detective while attempting to avoid becoming entangled with Henry VIII’s demands for religious reform and political unrest. SERIES

The four-episode new series will star Arthur Hughes, best known for his part in the BBC series Then Barbara Met Alan, as Shardlake.

The character is described as “a lawyer with an acute sense of justice and one of the few honest men in a world beset with scheming and plots” in the summary.

Arthur Hughes, who plays the title role in Shardlake, will be joined by Sean Bean in the role of Thomas Cromwell, Shardlake’s employer and Henry VIII’s formidable and dangerous right-hand man.

Regarding Shardlake, despite his steadfast allegiance to Cromwell and the Crown, he experiences constant harassment and abuse due to his scoliosis, which he developed during the Tudor era.

When he finds out about a significant murder that has connections to the monastery, his entire world is upended.

PLOT UPDATES OF SHARDLAKE SEASON 1

Naturally, the new show is based on CJ Sansom’s books of the same name. Stephen Butchard, the author of The Last Kingdom, adapted the books for the small screen.

According to the official series summary, “This four-part drama, based on the first novel in Sansom’s series, is an eerie whodunit adventure, set in 16th-century England during the dissolution of the monasteries. It is drenched in mystery, suspense, and deception.”

“Shardlake’s sheltered life as a lawyer is turned upside down when Cromwell instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea.”

It goes on: “The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery, and now Shardlake’s solving of the murder and closing of the monastery are crucial for Cromwell’s own political survival.” He makes it very clear to Shardlake that giving up is not an option.

Cromwell maintains that he is followed by the confident, attractive Jack Barak, and Shardlake is left wondering if Barak is a spy for Cromwell or just his helper.

“At Scarnsea, the duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks, who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order.”
