“The Talented Mr. Ripley” is the basis for a new eight-part television series that fans of Andrew Scott won’t want to miss! After seeing these new first-look photos, the rest of us are starting to get pretty excited too! The largest streaming service in the world, Netflix, acquired the project in early 2023, despite the project taking several years to construct.

After seeing some footage, Netflix executives quickly decided to acquire the series, creating a lot of excitement about Ripley since it was originally commissioned by Showtime in 2019. The show is directed and adapted for the screen by Steven Zallian (The Night Of).

The eight-part series stars Andrew Scott, who previously starred in Sherlock and Fleabag, as Tom Ripley, a young con artist in 1960s New York who is hired by a wealthy man to persuade his errant, hedonistic son to come back from Italy.

The Talented Mr. Ripley, directed by Anthony Minghella and starring Jude Law, Matt Damon, and Gwyneth Paltrow, won a BAFTA in 1999. While fans of the film will recognize the story, Scott and screenwriter/director Steven Zaillian—who won an Oscar for his screenplay for Schindler’s List—are poised to give the story a fresh spin.

Johnny Flynn plays Dickie Greenleaf, the mischievous child that Thomas is entrusted with saving in Netflix’s Ripley, with Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood and singer-songwriter Eliot Sumner in an undisclosed role.

The series’ creator is Steven Zaillian, a well-known screenwriter best known for creating the HBO miniseries The Night Of (starring Riz Ahmed), Gangs of New York, The Irishman, and the Academy Award-winning script Schindler’s List.

PLOT OF THE RIPLEY SEASON 1:

The first season of this drama centers on Tom Ripley, a poor guy struggling to make ends meet in early 1960s New York, who gets recruited by a wealthy man to persuade his vagrant son Dickie Greenleaf, who is enjoying a nice ex-pat life in Italy thanks to trust funds, to go back home. However, Tom’s hiring marks the beginning of a convoluted life of deceit, fraud, and murder.
