The Monkey Man teaser gained widespread attention earlier this year after becoming viral on the internet. Excited by the action, violence, and overall handling of the trailer, which was directed by none other than Slumdog Millionaire (2009) actor Dev Patel, who also plays the lead role.

The film gained more attention after making its debut to a standing ovation at South by Southwest on March 11. With an Indian release scheduled for April 19, and an initial release date of April 5 in the USA and other key markets, recent developments have created concern.

Universal Pictures India has stopped mentioning the April 19 release date in recent social media posts, instead using the ambiguous phrase “Coming soon.”

Even on ticketing websites such as BookMyShow, the movie’s premiere date has vanished. There is a lot of conjecture that the movie might not have its planned April 19 launch.

In accordance with a source who spoke with Bollywood Hungama, the studio hopes to open Monkey Man in Indian theatres on April 19, subject to approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

However, everything is contingent upon the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) approval. There are concerns that certain parts of the film may offend a certain audience segment due to its extreme violence.

As a result, some time is anticipated for the Censor process. The USA team at Universal Studios must also approve the CBFC’s requested modifications. The local team will implement the adjustments after receiving their approval, and only then will the team make the release date announcement.

The insider went on to say that Monkey Man will premiere in India on April 19 if the clearance procedure goes according to plan; if not, it might not come out until April 26.

“Monkey Man will be released in India on April 19 if the procedure is finished on schedule. If not, it will be released on April 26, one week later. Hopefully, in a week, a fuller picture will become apparent,” the insider said.

Monkey Man is the story of a young man who killed his mother and is seeking revenge on dishonest authorities. The movie also stars Vipin Sharma, Sharlto Copley, Sikandar Kher, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Dev Patel.

Jordan Peele, the director of Get Out (2017) and Us (2019), was impressed with the movie and bought it because he thought it should be shown in theatres instead not only on Netflix.
