In Vishal Bhardwaj’s grounded and enduring adaptation of Othello, Omkara (2006), Konkona Sensharma played a captivating Emilia. It is hardly surprising that Abhishek Chaubey, who served as the movie’s assistant director, has brought Sensharma back for Killer Soup.

Sensharma, a talented dramatic actor, shines with material that veers and turns: In the anthology Ajeeb Daastaans in 2021, Geeli Pucchi rode high on her skillful slipperiness as a performer.

Sensharma’s eyes widen in mockery or real terror; she can also be deceitfully calm while soothing and pleading. She plays fairly commonplace pawns who end up reconfiguring the board, making a feast out of these roles.

Consider Swathi Shetty, her most recent invention. She is a horrible chef and homemaker who makes her husband Prabhu (Manoj Bajpayee) the same boring paya soup every day.

They reside in a made-up southern hill town where Prabhu manages a failing real estate business. Although her husband finds Swathi’s goal of opening her own restaurant unrealistic, Umesh, her hidden lover (who is also Bajpayee), graciously encourages her. Umesh is a narrow-eyed masseuse who has debts from gaming.

Though he treats Swathi kindly, Prabhu is wealthier. Swathi hedges her bets by pausing for a long, delightful moment before answering Umesh’s question, “Do you love me?”

A CRISIS ARISES WHEN PRABHU DISCOVERS THE LOVERS WHEREABOUTS ONE EVENING.

When the shambling jerk dies, Swathi, realising how much Umesh resembles her spouse, devises a scheme. The novel Killer Soup, authored by Chaubey, Anaiza Merchant, Anant Tripathi, and Harshad Nalawade, is based on a true story from 2017 about a Hyderabadi woman who attempted to pass off her partner as her deceased spouse.

Chaubey indulges his penchant for quirky detail while directing his debut television series. Shakespeare comes out from every nook and cranny while Swathi attends covert culinary classes under the alias Manisha Koirala.

Rahman and Robert Frost help make breakthroughs. But eventually the fun wears off. Although Killer Soup lacks consistency, it does have flavour and texture. The Shetty family’s secrets and conflicts are just mildly interesting.

Prabhu’s niece Appu (a remarkable Anula Navleker) expresses a desire to travel overseas in one intriguing track. She is trapped managing her dad’s accounts even though she aspires to study charcoal drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts.

But good components alone do not make a healthy soup. For reasons it cannot control, Killer Soup’s disappointing start to the streaming year continues. It is very evident what kind of bets platforms like Netflix and Prime Video are ready to make in India. Large-scale, politically charged performances are becoming rare.

its withdrawal leaves safe but eccentric criminal dramas in its wake. Abhishek Chaubey made two of the most exhilarating films of the previous decade, Udta Punjab (2016) and Sonchiriya (2019). They hissed and snapped at us like snakes. Nobody imagined or prayed for the day when streaming would take away his pain.
