Seeing A Round of Applause, I can declare with some degree of certainty that no one has ever seen anything like it. With six experimental vignettes per season, each with a unique premise, the Turkish Netflix series offers a boldly creative and highly allegorical look at growing up, relationships, parental anxiety, and more. As always, at the very least, a really unique approach deserves respect. Saying that A Round of Applause is unlike most other TV series isn’t exaggeration; I mean it. I watch television for a living, so it makes sense that I watch a lot of it. I’ve never seen something like this before.
It would never have been produced in the West. For all the very valid criticisms that might be thrown at streaming services like Netflix, the Turkish film and TV industries have been quietly outstanding for years, and it is indisputable that everyone benefits greatly from their enthusiasm to acquire foreign works.
What is this, though? It’s really about Mehmet and Zeynep’s relationship—a couple who are expecting their first child—on the surface. It tells the story of their fears before he is born and their numerous shortcomings afterward. It’s also about Metin, the youngster, who we encounter as an imprisoned adult man who smokes a chain and is nostalgic for his past existence as an orange.
Even when the characters wake up from their dreams—Mehmet had a major role in that premiere—the strangeness persists, as if the fact that a character was sleeping is insufficient justification. It is fractal eccentricity; as you peel back each layer, you uncover even odd things.
What you’re seeing is not reliable. Since every character’s perspective is influenced by their fears and illusions, you cannot put your trust in any one of them. The storyline, if one exists at all, is found in the spaces between concepts, where reality occasionally peeks through like a breath of fresh air. After a five-year-old demonically recite poem, there’s a profoundly wordless moment of understanding between two individuals recognizing they no longer love each other.
The show makes perfect sense, though, in a weird manner. In (nearly) every case, I believe I understood what it was attempting to express, Having children may be beneficial. Alternatively, maybe my role as a critic with a word count deadline drove me to overanalyze it. I do, however, insist that if you’re willing to look for it, the message is there. And I’m positive that it has never been packaged quite like this in any other program.
A PRODUCTION THAT IS GENUINELY UNIQUE:
As I indicated before, A Round of Applause is likely to offend a lot of people, and since it’s such a bizarre production, I can’t really blame them. Nobody knows how well it will work for Netflix, but one would think the simple answer would be “not well at all.” Most people find it too subtle, and a mainstream audience finds it too odd.
However, there will be a middle class, to which I belong, who believe that everyone should see if they understand it for themselves, whether rightly or badly. Granted, we might just be daydreaming, and my understanding of the various concepts may differ from yours.
However, it’s possible that’s the point, and that makes it far more intriguing than a simple yes or no. Even after reaching the word count, I can’t stop thinking about this strange little show. Proceed with that as you please.
