Xi and Biden exchange warnings on Taiwan: Latest World News

During a phone call that lasted more than two hours, the leaders of the US and China warned one another regarding Taiwan. The US strongly opposed any unilateral attempts to alter the island’s status, President Joe Biden informed his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

The US stance on Taiwan, he continued, had not altered. According to Beijing, Mr. Xi warned Mr. Biden that “anyone who plays with fire would get burned” and urged him to uphold the one-China policy.

Prior to a rumored plan for US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to visit Taiwan, tensions over the topic have risen.

The state department claims that Ms. Pelosi hasn’t made any travel plans, but China has threatened “severe consequences” if she goes ahead with the trip.

The White House has described Chinese statements against any such trip as “obviously unhelpful and not required,” despite Mr. Biden telling reporters last week that “the military thinks it’s not a good idea”.

Ms. Pelosi, who succeeds the vice president as the next in line for the presidency, would be the highest-ranking US official to visit Taiwan since 1997.

A senior Biden administration official described the phone chat as “straight” and “honest,” adding that Mr. Biden and Mr. Xi also discussed setting up a potential in-person encounter.

They did not personally interact when Mr. Biden was president, but he hosted Mr. Xi during the Chinese president’s 2015 visit to the US.

China hasn’t ruled out the possibility of using force to annex Taiwan since it sees it as a separatist province that must reunite with the rest of the nation. The one-China policy prevents Washington from diplomatically recognizing Taipei.

However, the US does provide the island, which is democratically self-governing, with weaponry so that it can defend itself.

Apart from Taiwan, the two leaders reportedly spoke about a variety of other topics, such as climate change and healthcare security, according to the White House.

The Trump administration placed tariffs on Chinese imports, and the Biden administration has been contemplating whether to reverse those measures in the hopes of bringing down the US’s soaring inflation.

The senior US official, though, asserted that Mr. Xi and the US president did not discuss that issue on Thursday. Analysts claim that Xi Jinping and Joe Biden prefer to keep their disagreement out of the public eye, according to Barbara Plett Usher, the BBC’s State Department Correspondent.

However, as evidenced once more by their different recollections of Thursday’s call, neither has made an effort to revise their contrasting narratives.

The White House summarised it by saying that it was an effort to “responsibly manage disputes” and cooperate when “interests match”.

Beijing claimed that in a much longer one, many of their interests did coincide. However, it put the fault on the US, criticizing how the Biden administration views China as its “most significant long-term threat” and “primary adversary.”

Xi and Biden exchange warnings on Taiwan: It’s Challenging too. Identify Any Positives

The statement made by President Xi to President Joe Biden that “those who play with fire will get burned” has received a lot of attention.

The admonition is stern, but not unusual, for America. When a US congressional team visited Taiwan earlier this year, the Chinese foreign ministry spoke in exactly the same way.

In a warning to Taiwan last year, the Chinese defense ministry used the exact same words.

It gains greater credibility now that President Xi has cited it. But even if someone like Nancy Pelosi comes to this country next week, it doesn’t necessarily signal that China is planning military action against Taiwan.

Instead, it is warning America that if it keeps going in the same direction, warfare would inevitably break out. Regarding the broader US-China relationship, it is difficult to envisage any positive outcomes from this phone discussion.
