When is Fall 2022? Know Every Detail Here

Fall 2022 Updates: One of the four seasons that make up the year is fall, which is more commonly referred to as autumn outside of North America. It is the season that lies between the hottest season, summer, and the coldest season, winter.

Meteorological Fall Versus Astronomical Fall

The beginning and finish dates of fall can be determined in a number of ways. The astronomical calendar and the meteorological calendar are the two that are most frequently used. The beginning and finish dates of the meteorological and astronomical fall are different.

The astronomical calendar’s start and finish dates for fall are determined by how the Earth moves in relation to the sun and the equinoxes and solstices that arise from that movement. The September equinox, which takes place every year between September 21 and 24, marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

The December solstice, which takes place every year between December 20 and December 23, marks the transition from fall to winter. Fall lasts from the March equinox (March 19–21) through the June solstice in the Southern Hemisphere (June 20 to 22).

Based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is essentially the same as Greenwich Mean Time, the start and finish dates for fall listed on this page are the dates of astronomical fall in the Northern Hemisphere (GMT – the time zone of the United Kingdom).

All around the Northern Hemisphere, fall begins and finishes at the same time, however depending on the year and a location’s time zone, the date and local time vary from place to place. It might fall on the day before for places farther east (further ahead of UTC), and on the day after for places farther west (further behind UTC).

Falling Meteorology

On the other hand, seasons are determined by meteorologists based on climatic factors and the annual temperature cycle. Their ability to compare the same time period across multiple years is crucial.

While the length of the meteorological seasons is less erratic and fixed at 90 days for winter in a non-leap year (91 days in a leap year), 92 days for spring and summer, and 91 days for fall, the length of the astronomical seasons varies between 89 and 93 days.

In most of the Northern Hemisphere, meteorological fall is generally defined as the three months of September, October, and November, with the season beginning on September 1 and ending on November 30.

However, the precise definition of a season’s timing and length can vary in different areas based on local conditions. There is no “formal norm” regarding the definition of fall, and different nations follow different customs.

While Australia and New Zealand use meteorological fall, the majority of North America and Europe use astronomical fall (however, as these countries are in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are opposed and fall there lasts from March to May).
