Campus police and university president Jim Ryan acknowledged the incident that left three football players dead and two other individuals hurt late on Sunday night at the University of Virginia.
After a manhunt that lasted more than 12 hours and involved a campus-wide lockdown, police have captured the alleged shooter, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr.
Jones, a former football player and current student at the university, is accused of three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a weapon in the commission of a felony, UVA Police Chief Timothy Longo told reporters during a news conference.
The shooting happened at approximately 10:30 p.m. ET on a charter bus carrying students who had just returned from a field trip to see a play, according to the university president.
Devin Chandler, a wide receiver from Virginia Beach, Va.; Lavel Davis, a wide receiver from Dorchester, S.C.; and D’Sean Perry, a linebacker from Miami, Fla., are all juniors on the UVA football team, and police said all three victims were discovered dead at the site.
Two additional victims, one of whom is in severe condition, are receiving medical attention but have not yet been identified by university officials.

Public transportation to campus was suspended on Monday, and classes and extracurricular activities were also cancelled. Additionally shuttered for the day were the public schools in the neighbouring Albemarle County.
Just after 10:30 a.m., the campus-wide shelter-in-place order was removed. ET after a thorough scouring of the grounds.
According to a news release from the local police department, Jones was captured “without incident” in a Richmond, Virginia suburb, some 76 miles southeast of the institution.
Jones will be accused of committing three second-degree murders and three felonies with a firearm, according to UVA Police Chief Tim Longo.
Despite not participating in any games in 2018, Jones, a student at the university, was listed as a football player on the athletics department’s website.
Jones, according to Longo, had previously attracted the attention of campus police due to his involvement in a hazing episode.
Jones broke a hidden weapons restriction outside the city of Charlottesville in February 2021, according to Longo, who added that police terminated the investigation after witnesses declined to assist.

On Monday, social media was flooded with tributes to Chandler, Davis, and Perry. Football players and coaches from UVA shared pictures and tales of the men while expressing their horror, fury, and sadness.
Chandler and Davis were reportedly both students of Jack Hamilton at UVA, who characterised Chandler as “an really kind girl who is humorous and sociable and who always has a big smile on her face. one of those people that you can’t help but like.”
According to Hamilton, Davis made an effort to befriend non-athletes and was well-liked by many of his classmates.
President Biden’s “deepest condolences” are extended in a statement by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre to the “countless families, friends, and neighbours grieving for those slain as well as those injured in this horrible shooting.”
Regarding a bill that was approved by the House of Representatives in July but doesn’t seem to have a chance of passing the Senate due to a filibuster, Pierre stated, “We need to enact an assault weapons ban to remove weapons of war off of America’s streets.”
