Marvel is currently developing a Thunderbolts film; here is everything we currently know about it, including the likely release date, actors, and plot.

In keeping with Marvel Studios’ long-standing practise of hiring independent filmmakers, director Jake Schreier will lead the Thunderbolts movie. His hiring makes the Thunderbolts project, which had been reported to be underway, official.

Nevertheless, many Marvel moviegoers had long-held rumours that a Thunderbolts team would appear in the MCU before those reports first surfaced a few months ago.

Part of that is due to Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier’s steadfast presence, who viewers believe deserves a more prominent leadership position than what has been granted to him thus far.

Marvel’s darker tone in Phase 3 and beyond, the popularity of the Thunderbolts’ DC antihero rival Suicide Squad, and the introduction of new characters with murky morals all supported the notion that a Thunderbolts project would be in the works.

As is customary for Marvel’s live-action films and television programmes, the Thunderbolts MCU movie will likely diverge significantly from the comics.

But a lot of material has already been accumulated covertly in the MCU for a Thunderbolts movie. Here is everything we currently know about the upcoming Thunderbolts film from Marvel.

Thunderbolts’ current narrative is being kept tightly under wraps, and it’s unclear if a script has been written at all.

There are other directions the MCU might take this, though. It’s entirely possible that the MCU could adapt some version of the team’s origin story from the comics, where Zemo recruits a team of villains dressed as heroes. Zemo’s ending in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier obviously sets up more of him in the future.

It’s more likely that Marvel will eschew the villain roots and instead make them a team of antiheroes and other heroes who have fallen from favour now that Contessa Val has entered the picture and Zemo appears to be playing both sides.

Uncertainty surrounds what they might encounter, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see one or more Disney+ shows adapt the Thunderbolts movie’s plot.

That includes a number of figures who have commanded the Thunderbolts, including as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Baron Zemo (Daniel Bruhl), Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and even Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe).

Given that his actor, William Hurt, passed away, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk is the only superhero leader who is unlikely to make an appearance.

Other candidates include Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Emil Blonsky/Abomination (Tim Roth), Jack Duquesne/Swordsman (Tony Dalton), Trish Walker/Hellcat (Rachael Taylor), and Ava/Ghost. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of these candidates (Hannah John-Kamen).

At Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July, “Thunderbolts” and its 2024 release date were formally revealed. The movie “Thunderbolts” will debut on July 26, 2024.
