The Construction Stage of the NASA EZIE Mission, Which is intended to study electrical currents in the atmosphere, has been reached.

The Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer (EZIE) mission of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has entered the building stage following a thorough design review that approved the project for future advancement.

In order to unravel the riddle surrounding the structure and evolution of electrojets, scientists will use the EZIE mission to investigate electrical currents in the uppermost reaches of the Earth’s atmosphere. Launched no sooner than 2024, the mission will consist of three identical CubeSats orbiting the Earth in a pearls-on-a-string pattern.

The ionosphere, a region of the atmosphere noted for the dense presence of charged particles known as ions, is where auroral electrojets, electrical currents that arise around 100 kilometers above the surface of the Earth, are found. The electrojets are only a small portion of a much larger electrical circuit that connects the Earth to the surrounding space up to a distance of 160,000 kilometers.

A molecule’s light spectrum can divide due to a process called Zeeman splitting when a strong magnetic field is present. The EZIE Mission team’s scientists will be able to deduce the electrojet currents and the resulting magnetic fields on the ionosphere above because magnetic and electrical fields coexist.

These investigations are crucial because they will allow researchers to understand how the power and magnitude of these electrojets alter as solar storms affect the magnetosphere of Earth. Understanding how space weather phenomena such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), solar flares, solar storms, and other occurrences might affect the earth is crucial for our civilization, which is becoming more and more dependent on electrical equipment in every aspect of life.

The Heliophysics Explorers Program is providing funding for the mission, which is being run by the Explorers Program Office at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Maverick Space Systems is handling launch and deployment operations, and Blue Canyon Technologies is handling other mission-critical infrastructure.
