Tesla Updates: A federal court in California ordered a fresh trial on Monday on the compensation owed by Tesla to a Black former factory worker who sued the business of racial discrimination after he rejected a $15 million judgement. A week after the former elevator operator, Owen Diaz, declared he would not accept the judge’s award, US District Judge William Orrick in San Francisco approved Tesla’s move for a new trial.

Requests for comment from Tesla and Diaz’s attorneys were not immediately complied with. One of the highest verdicts ever in a discrimination case involving a single employee, a jury awarded Diaz $137 million (roughly Rs. 1,070 crore) in October of last year. In April, Orrick claimed Tesla was liable to Diaz for discrimination, but he reduced the judgement to $15 million because he felt it was excessive.Last Monday, Diaz’s attorneys claimed that the smaller compensation was unfair and violated his constitutional rights. Orrick scheduled a conference for July 12 but did not establish a date for the new trial.Diaz claimed in his 2017 lawsuit that he was subjected to a hostile work environment at Tesla’s Fremont, California, assembly facility, which included racist slurs, caricatures, and swastikas.Several complaints, including one from a California civil rights agency, accuse Tesla of systemic racial discrimination and sexual harassment at the Fremont factory.A Tesla shareholder filed a lawsuit this month, accusing Elon Musk, the company’s CEO, and the board of directors of ignoring employee complaints and promoting a hostile workplace atmosphere.Tesla claims it has policies in place to prevent and resolve workplace misbehaviour, and it has denied any wrongdoing.
