It was regarded as one of the major soul music producers in the recording business by 1973. In less than two decades, the tenacious outlaw—who had begun as a little, family-run record store and studio in Memphis, Tennessee—grew into a groundbreaking worldwide record label.

STAX: Soulsville U.S.A. traces the unlikely beginning story of Stax Records and pays homage to its complex music library and all the legendary artists that emerged from the iconic studio. It is propelled by a striking collection of restored and remastered archival performance footage and intimate interviews with key players in the label’s remarkable history.

STORYLINE OF THE STAX: SOULSVILLE U.S.A. SEASON 1

We felt incredibly happy and content. The first trailer for STAX: Soulsville U.S.A., a documentary series that HBO Docs will release later this month, has been released. The documentary series produced by HBO “captures how an underdog record label launched a movement and superstar musicians like Isaac Hayes and Otis Redding.”

That world-electrifying Memphis soul sound… A bold group of interracial partners in Memphis in the 1960s ventured to produce music on their own terms and founded Stax Records, one of the most significant Black music labels in America. The 1972 benefit concert Wattstax, which drew over 100,000 African Americans, saw Stax singers pay tribute to the Watts Rebellion at the height of their fame.

In the midst of significant racial tensions, systematic injustice, and social unrest, Stax achieved remarkable artistic and cultural achievement. The studio also overcame numerous financial losses and setbacks before closing its doors after 15 groundbreaking years.

Sam Moore, Deanie Parker, Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Al Bell, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, and Estelle Axton all made appearances. Beautiful homage to Stax and all of its artists, from the looks of it.
