About Sri Lanka Inaugurates Luxury Train

On Sunday, India offered AC Diesel Multiple Units (AC DMUs) under a credit arrangement, launching an intercity rail service with all amenities. The luxury train would traverse around 386 kilometres from Colombo’s Mount Lavinia suburb to Jaffna’s Kankesanthurai port area in the north.

“Advancing the railway infrastructure!!” The train service to the Northern Province, which began today, “highlights two major pillars of India’s development relationship with Sri Lanka: infrastructural development and a country-wide emphasis,” according to a tweet from the Indian High Commission. The maiden trip was taken by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Transport Pavithra Wanniarachchi, who was greeted by India’s Deputy High Commissioner Vinod K Jacob at the Colombo Fort Station during the ceremony.

“Hon’ble Minister @pavithrawannia1 began the railway service from Mt.Lavinia to KKS after inaugurating the AC Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) supplied by @RITESLimited under an Indian credit line.” In a tweet, the Indian High Commission said, “She took the inaugural journey and was welcomed at the #Colombo #Fort Station by Deputy High Commissioner.”

“This train service will encourage people-to-people exchange and will focus on mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries,” Jacob explained. The railway service will run across the island nation, connecting Colombo with Kankesanthurai, a Tamil-majority town on the northern tip of the Jaffna Peninsula.

Wanniarachchi expressed gratitude to the Indian government for continuing to assist Sri Lanka in combating the current pandemic. According to an official release, “the provision of air-conditioned diesel multiple units is just one of the many railway projects being conducted by India in Sri Lanka.” “There are also other ongoing initiatives,” the statement continued, “including the supply of passenger coaches under an Indian Line of Credit.”

The Indian High Commission noted in a statement that India’s overall development portfolio in Sri Lanka is over USD 3.5 billion, with around USD 570 million in grant programmes. “In keeping with the government and people of Sri Lanka’s priorities, modernisation of railroads and building of new railway infrastructure have been significant sectors of attention under the Indian Government’s development portfolio in Sri Lanka,” the statement continued.
