Sean Astin Updates: Sean Astin, an Oscar nominee, has agreed to star in the cycling drama Hard Miles alongside fellow Stranger Things alum Matthew Modine. R.J. Daniel Hanna, a 2021 Academy Nicholl Fellow, will be directing the film from a screenplay he and Christian Sander wrote.
Cynthia Kaye McWilliams (The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey), Leslie David Baker (The Office), Jahking Guillory (On My Block), Jackson Kelly (Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion), Damien Diaz (Marvel’s Runaways), and Zachary T. Robbins are among the additional cast members announced for the independent film (Bloodline).
The movie is based on the true account of Colorado’s Ridge View Academy’s cycling team, which has been giving at-risk youngsters a second shot for years via academic rigour, individualised care, competitive athletics, and leadership.
As previously mentioned, Modine plays Greg Townsend, who has been in charge of the Ridge View staff for the past 30 years.
With Guillory, Jelly, Diaz, and Robbins playing members of the cycling team, as well as McWilliams playing the commanding but sympathetic Ridgeview youth counsellor Haddie, Astin will play the good-hearted local bike mechanic Speedy.
Baker will play the under pressure facility director Skip Bowman. Pensé Productions’ Christian Sander is the producer, and Scott Sander is the EP.
For their live-action short Kangaroo Court, Astin and his wife Christine received a joint Oscar nomination in 1995. The Goonies, The War of the Roses, Encino Man, Rudy, Courage Under Fire, the Lord of the Rings films, 50 First Dates, Click, and Gloria Bell are just a few of the latter’s well-known big-screen acting credits.
He portrayed Bob Newby, Joyce Byers’ (Winona Ryder’s) boyfriend, in the second season of the Netflix series Stranger Things. He has also appeared in numerous other television programmes, including Young Rock, The Strain, and 24.
The actor’s other future projects include The Man in the White Van from XYZ Films and the second season of HBO’s Perry Mason, a true-crime drama.
Having completed a triathlon in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, in 2015, Astin is also no stranger to the world of biking. He is represented by Luber Roklin Entertainment, Stewart Talent, and the law firm of Brecheen Feldman Breimer’s Dave Feldman; APA’s McWilliams; Innovative Artists’ Baker and Guillory; Duvall Mac Talent’s Kelly; Talent Works’ Diaz; A3 Artists Agency’s Robbins; and A3 and Artistic Endeavors’ Diaz.
