The most prevalent cause of blindness in the world is glaucoma. The visual nerves of glaucoma patients have been injured. Nerve damage, which prevents visual information from reaching the brain, is frequently caused by extremely high eye pressure. Isn’t it great if there was a technique to lower eye pressure and avoid glaucoma? A group of scientists has created a small wireless device – a flexible (smart) contact lens – that can detect growing ocular pressure. To relieve the pressure, it then releases a medication on demand.

Despite the fact that the wireless gadget has only been tested in pig and rabbit eyes, this discovery is significant. Several studies have previously focused on either monitoring eye pressure changes or delivering a medication, but not both. In this study, a group of Chinese researchers did exactly that: it senses variations in pressure and administers medicinal medications as needed.

In their research, electrical engineer Cheng Yang of Sun Yat-Sen University and colleagues noted, “It is exceedingly tough t install a complex theranostic system composited by multi-modules on a contact lens.”

The researchers also mentioned that the double-layered lens they created contains brimonidine, an anti-glaucoma medication. The wireless technology triggers the release of the medicine when the lens senses that eye pressure has reached a dangerous level. The medication passes through the cornea and into the eye from the underside of the lens.
