President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Says He Wil Appoint A New PM And Cabinet This Week In Sri Lanka Crisis: Latest Updates!!!

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Updates: In the midst of widespread anti-government rallies over the country’s greatest economic crisis, Sri Lanka’s embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa stated on Wednesday that he will nominate a new Prime Minister and Cabinet this week, which will propose constitutional amendments.

President Gotabaya also stated in a speech to the country that after the new Prime Minister and Government are appointed, a constitutional amendment will be moved to adopt the provisions of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which will give Parliament more authority.

As he tries to quell protests over his handling of a severe economic crisis, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has named a new prime minister. Ranil Wickremesinghe, a senior opposition MP, was sworn in as the leader of a planned cross-party administration.

THE MOVE CAME AFTER THE PRESIDENT DEFIED CALLS TO QUIT AND PROMISED IN A NATIONAL ADDRESS TO RESTORE ORDER.

During his nationwide address, Mr Rajapaksa stated that he will pick a new prime minister and cabinet with the support of the majority of parliamentarians. Mr Wickremesinghe has been a fixture in Sri Lankan politics for decades; this will be his sixth tenure as Prime Minister, though he has never completed a full term.

He is thought to be close to the Rajapaksas, and experts believe he was chosen because he could ensure their safety and any safe passage they could require. However, he is currently unpopular among the opposition and the general public.

WHAT IS THE PERCEPTION OF THE APPOINTMENT?

In Sri Lanka, the news that Ranil Wickremesinghe has been named Prime Minister has been welcomed with shock and incredulity. Mr Wickremesinghe’s public appeal has slowly declined over the years, notwithstanding his brilliance as a tactician.

His once-ruling United National Party only managed to secure one parliamentary seat in the recent election, making him the party’s lone representative in parliament. Despite being in opposition, his apparent closeness to the Rajapaksa family has been a crucial factor.

Many believe he shielded them when they lost power in 2015, and his selection today is seen as a method for the president to reject demonstrators’ demands for him to resign. President Rajapaksa pledged to relinquish some of the presidency’s power to parliament in a speech on Wednesday, but gave no timetable.

Those clamouring for his resignation were underwhelmed, with many claiming that his speech failed to address the fundamental concerns.

“WHERE DID YOU SPEND THE PREVIOUS 30 DAYS?”

People are without medicine and food, and the entire country is at a stop “A protester in Colombo, Kavindya Thennakoon. “The reforms he proposes are not what we require. Right now, what we need is for [the president] to step down. It perplexes me that Gotabaya Rajapaksa can not get this.”
