Variety reports that the actress passed away on Saturday night in Silver City, New Mexico. Her 15-year business partner and talent manager Gilbert Bell confirmed the death.
Nichelle Nichols was a trailblazer since she was one of the first black women in the US to play an authoritative character in the television series as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura. She also participated in one of the first interracial kisses to appear on screen in Star Trek. Additionally, she worked with NASA to promote the aspirations of African-Americans to be astronauts.
Kyle Johnson, her son, sent a notice about her passing on the official uhura.com website “My mother, Nichelle Nichols, passed away last night due to natural causes. She will, however, continue to emit light, just like the newly discovered old galaxies.”
Her son Kyle Johnson issued a message on Facebook that read, “I regret to inform you that, unlike for so many years, the magnificent light in the firmament no longer shines for us. Her light, however, will endure for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and be inspired by, much like the old galaxies now being glimpsed for the first time.”
After the news was released, tributes poured in, including those from a long list of “Trekkies” who were devastated. A number of Hollywood celebrities also paid their respects on social media. J. J. Abrams, the filmmaker, commented on Twitter, “a noteworthy actress playing a noteworthy character. Nichelle, we will miss you terribly. I’m sending my respect and love.”
