Security personnel on the site subdued the shooter, and a suspect, 41, is currently in police custody.Tetsuya Yamagami, the suspect, admitted killing Abe with a handmade gun and claimed he had a vendetta against a “particular organisation,” according to investigators.

After searching the suspect’s home, police discovered many additional homemade weapons that were similar to those used in the attack and took them into custody, they announced during a press conference.Police reported that they had advised locals to leave the area after discovering explosives at the residence.

Police only confirm that Mr. Yamagami acknowledged to shooting the former prime minister when asked by a member of the Japanese media if the shooter intended to murder Abe.

The attack was denounced by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who said: “It is cruel and nasty and it cannot be condoned.”Before Abe’s passing was officially confirmed, Mr. Kishida called the incident “an act of barbarism that happened during the elections – the very cornerstone of our democracy” and “completely inexcusable.” 

The incident left Abe with two bullet wounds to his neck and heart damage, according to medical professionals.In the moments following the attack, he was said to be awake and responsive, but the 67-year-health old’s worsened.

By the time the former prime minister was transferred for treatment, doctors said that no vital signs had been noticed.Abe underwent more than 100 blood transfusions over the course of four hours before being declared dead at 5:03 p.m. local time (0803 GMT). 

WITNESSES OBSERVE A MAN CARRYING A SIZABLE GUN  

At the time of the incident, Abe was delivering a speech for a political candidate at a traffic light in the southern city of Nara.

Witnesses spotted a man firing twice at the former PM from behind while carrying what they perceived to be a heavy gun. While onlookers screamed in horror and disbelief, Abe collapsed to the ground.

Abe had a security crew with him, but it seems the shooter managed to approach Mr. Abe within a few metres without any checks or barriers.When the perpetrator made no attempt to flee, security personnel dove on him and took his firearm.

He reportedly served in Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force, which is the country’s version of the navy. He reportedly retired from active duty in 2005.

Abe’s speech served as part of a campaign for his previous party, the Liberal Democratic Party, ahead of this week’s upper house elections in Japan.Later, it was reportedly announced to ministers around the nation to return right away to Tokyo.

The hashtag “We want democracy, not violence” was trending on Japanese social media, where many people expressed their disgust and outrage at the incident.
