A 48-hour sit-in intended to protest American imperialism turned into a 444-day international crisis and nonstop media extravaganza.

The series is a riveting account of one of the most dramatic international standoffs in American history, a deep dive into the geopolitical history that precipitated the crisis, and an examination of the political fallout that is still felt today.

It features never-before-seen archival footage and revelatory new interviews with the American hostages and Iranian hostage-takers alike.

The episodes of HOSTAGES travel back in time to examine decades of the deep, entangled interactions between the two countries as well as the 444-day ordeal, creating a fascinating, nuanced depiction of an event that garnered international news.

The show focuses on the complexity of U.S./Iran relations that have developed over the course of a history marked by clandestine CIA operations, lavish oil agreements, overthrown governments, revolutionary ideals and religious fervour, a lost presidency, and covert arms deals.

Through first-person narratives from former hostages, Iranian student revolutionaries and hostage-takers, diplomats, security experts, politicians, and journalists in both nations, the series explores a variety of viewpoints on the complex impact of the crisis.

The first two episodes of the four-part HBO Documentary Films original series HOSTAGES, a Show of Force production, will air back-to-back on Wednesday, September 28 (9:00–10:00 p.m. ET/PT).

The final two episodes will then air back-to-back on Thursday, September 29 at the same time on HBO. On September 28, HBO Max will make all four episodes of the show streamable.
