G7 Health Ministers Updates: The potential of a ‘highly transmissible’ Covid-19 version, according to G7 health ministers,’requires urgent action’ worldwide. Omicron was first discovered in South Africa and has since spread to at least 13 additional countries, leading numerous countries to tighten their containment procedures. France 24’s coverage of the day’s events may be found here. “We are aware that we are now in a race against time,” said Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission’s president.

She noted that vaccine makers needed two to three weeks “to acquire a complete view of the quality of the alterations.” G7 health ministers will meet in an emergency conference on November 29 to discuss the new Omicron Covid-19 strain that is spreading around the world and triggering border closures, as specialists scramble to figure out what the variant means for the pandemic’s fight. The G7 chair, Britain, convened the meeting after finding cases of the substantially modified new strain in an increasing number of countries.

Omicron, which was initially found in southern Africa, poses a new challenge to worldwide pandemic efforts. Several countries have already reinstated limitations that many thought were no longer in place. “We are aware that we are now in a race against time,” said Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission’s president. She noted that vaccine makers needed two to three weeks “to acquire a complete view of the quality of the alterations.”

Travel restrictions have already been imposed on southern Africa by a number of countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Netherlands. Angola has become the first country in southern Africa to halt all flights to and from its neighbouring neighbours Mozambique, Namibia, and South Africa. President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa urged on countries to lift travel bans “before any further damage is done to our economies” on November 28.

Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, blamed Western countries’ border closures on “Afrophobia.” In an effort to curb the new Covid strain, the African director of the World Health Organization urged countries to follow science rather than impose flight bans. “With the Omicron form now found in numerous parts of the world, enacting travel bans that specifically target Africa undermines global unity,” said WHO regional director Matshidiso Moeti.

Race To Determine The Level Of Threat:

At least 13 cases of Omicron were found among 61 confined travellers who tested positive for coronavirus after arriving from South Africa, according to Dutch health officials. Aboard November 28, border police in the Netherlands confirmed the arrest of a couple on a plane at Schiphol Airport after they fled a hotel where guests were being quarantined.

Despite the increased threat, tens of thousands marched in Austria to protest the government’s decision to make vaccination mandatory, making Austria the first EU country to do so. Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg called it a “small hiccup” as comparison to the alternative for a country with one of Western Europe’s lowest vaccination rates.

Many European countries, like Germany and France, have already re-imposed limits to combat illness outbreaks, while Swiss voters overwhelmingly supported a proposed Covid pass ban in a ballot on November 28.
