Emancipation Updates: Will Smith is the star of the upcoming action-thriller movie Emancipation, which is directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by William N. Collage. In 2023, it is slated for release.
The horrific tale of Peter, a slave who escapes from a Louisiana plantation and travels arduously toward the North while dodging hunters, is told in the film Emancipation. The movie is based on the historical account of “Whipped Peter,” a slave who joined the Union Army after freeing himself from a plantation owned by John and Bridget Lyons. The scars left by flogging on his back were photographed during his Army medical test.
The images, which were initially published in the Independent in May 1863 and are now known as the infamous “Scoured Back” photos, are regarded as the earliest widely circulated images illustrating the horrors of slavery. Speaking to Deadline, Fuqua claimed that Peter’s historical notes had a significant role in the writing for Emancipation. Bill Collage, the author, “really dug deep into it,” according to Fuqua. A slave named Peter escapes from a Louisiana plantation after being nearly killed by whipping. As he travels north, he outwits hunters led by Fassel. The true account of Gordon, an escaped slave, served as the inspiration for the movie. In 1863, images of his bare back with severe scourging from an overseer’s whippings were widely disseminated, providing the abolitionist movement with evidence of the brutality of American slavery.
The cast of the movie has not yet been disclosed by Apple Original Films, but we do know that Will Smith will play Peter, a self-emancipated slave travelling to the north. Will Smith, who has received an Oscar nomination, first gained notoriety in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He later starred in a number of blockbuster hits, such as Men in Black, Bad Boys, The Pursuit of Happiness, and I Am Legend. He most recently made appearances in Gemini Man and Bad Boys for Life. Watch this space for updates as more cast members who will be appearing in the movie will be revealed as they become available.
