There is a ruler of the Kang Dynasty.Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed “Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings,” will continue to work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the director of “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” a Marvel Studios representative said.In a manner similar to how 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” concluded the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed “The Kang Dynasty” as part one of the two-part conclusion to the Multiverse Saga during the company’s extensive presentation at San Diego ComicCon on Saturday.

Those films were directed back-to-back by MCU veterans Anthony and Joe Russo, but Cretton will serve as the sole director of “The Kang Dynasty,” which will debut on May 2, 2025.The sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” is scheduled to debut on November 7, 2025, just six months after the first film. There is no official director attached to that film. Although neither a screenwriter nor casting announcements have been made for “The Kang Dynasty,” the title suggests that Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror, who will make his film debut in 2023’s “AntMan and the Wasp: Quantumania,” would play a significant role in the film. As his name suggests, Kang did succeed in conquistating Earth in a run of Marvel comics in the early 2000s, but the Avengers ultimately defeated him. Cretton is already well-established within the MCU, having signed an overall contract with Marvel Studios and Onyx Collective in late 2021.As part of that agreement, he is also producing a “Wonder Man” series for Disney+ with “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” writer Andrew Guest and working on the “ShangChi” sequel. Marvel has not yet assigned a date to either project.

After the COVID19 pandemic shutdown, “ShangChi” was the first Marvel Studios film to receive an exclusive theatrical release. It earned $432 million globally despite rolling shutdowns during the spread of the delta variant.

The 2013 indie movie “Short Term 12,” which helped rocket the career of its lead Brie Larson all the way to her role as Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was Cretton’s best-known work prior to that one. Since then, Larson has appeared in every Cretton film, including the biographical drama “The Glass Castle” from 2017 and the 2019 historical drama “Just Mercy” from Warner Bros., which she co-starred in with MCU veteran Michael B. Jordan. (Larson further made an appearance as Captain Marvel in one of the “ShangChi” post credits scenes.)At the “ShangChi” premiere, Cretton revealed to Variety that when he was in discussions with Marvel about directing “ShangChi,” he sought the counsel of Larson, Jordan, and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler. All of them agreed, according to Cretton. Yes, there is a lot of pressure and it is stressful, but none of that comes from the people you work with, Ryan added. That has stuck with me a lot. The group of people who created the business and this movie is very exceptional and supportive. They truly really enjoy exploring, much like kids do. Every scene piques their interest. And the motivation behind it all is the love of these fans. Every decision we make is done with the goal of giving these fans the best possible experience. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Cretton’s involvement in “The Kang Dynasty.”
