According to a nearly 40-page late-night filing from the US Department of Justice, Donald Trump and his legal team “likely” tried to “obstruct the government’s investigation” into how he handled the hundreds of documents he took with him after leaving office by trying to hide and remove sensitive government records from the former president’s Florida home.
On June 3, one of Mr. Trump’s attorneys acknowledged in a letter that federal law enforcement had received access to all records kept at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence.
The letter confirmed that “any and all” materials were accounted for after receiving a grand jury subpoena to return dozens of records in May.
Christina Bobb is the person thought to have signed that sworn document. Christina Bobb met FBI agents when they arrived at Mar-a-Lago on August 8 and later signed a receipt for goods seized as a result of the search warrant’s execution.
A few days after the search, Ms. Bobb, a former anchor for the far-right, openly pro-Trump One America News Network, claimed that the former president’s team had “turned over everything that we found, that we had.” Her reporting was instrumental in elevating fanciful election fraud conspiracy theories.
INVESTIGATORS AT MAR-A-LAGO HAVE LOCATED MORE THAN 320 CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS, ACCORDING TO THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT:
During the search on August 8th, 28 boxes and 100 documents were taken. In court filings and interviews with the media, Mr. Trump and his legal team have frequently asserted that they have given the Justice Department’s investigation their full cooperation.
Ms. Bobb said there was “nothing there” in what was found during interviews with far-right media in the days following the search.
However, according to the most recent filing from federal prosecutors, Mr. Trump’s staff prevented investigators from verifying the information Ms. Bobb had provided in the affidavit.
The government had no chance to verify that no documents with classified marks were still there because “the former president’s counsel clearly banned government officials from opening or peeking inside any of the boxes that remained in the storage area,” they claimed.
Almost 1.5 years after the end of the administration, they said, Mr. Trump’s attorney “offered no explanation as to why boxes of government materials, including 38 documents with classification markings, remained at the premises.” They claimed that a folder from that meeting in June had 38 files that were classified at levels up to top secret.
WHO IS CHRISTINA BOBB?
Before entering the US Department of Homeland Security during the administration of the then-President Trump, Ms. Bobb worked as a Judge Advocate in the US Marine Corps.
Her appearances on One America News, where she covered, contributed to, and attempted to obstruct media coverage of a political “audit” of the results of the 2020 presidential election in Maricopa County, Arizona, are well known for her.
As part of Arizona Republicans’ investigation into the validity of the county election results conducted by the now-defunct company Cyber Ninjas, Ms. Bobb pushed election-related conspiracies on the network and raised more than $600,000 through her charitable organisation.
An analysis that came to a conclusion found no such evidence of widespread fraud and discovered that Mr. Biden had won by a marginally bigger margin than the preliminary results.
She also joined Mr. Trump’s legal team, working with Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, in a phoney attempt to rig the entire 2020 election, including furthering the hoax “alternative electors” theory, according to The New York Times.
Ms. Bobb quit OAN in March to work for Save America, a party affiliated with Mr. Trump.
She is also one of several past president’s attorneys who were compelled to testify by the House Select Committee looking into the attack on the US Capitol, which was partly sparked by Mr. Trump’s false claim of voter fraud.
According to The New York Times and The Washington Post, on June 3 at Mar-a-Lago, Jay Bratt, the head of the Justice Department’s counterespionage division of the national security division, met with two Trump attorneys, among them Ms. Bobb, to retrieve any remaining classified materials on the property.
The materials were delivered to Mr. Bratt and other authorities, and according to The Times, Trump attorney Evan Corcoran wrote a statement that was signed by Ms. Bobb, the custodian of the documents, claiming that all secret information had been returned.
In response to Mr. Trump’s request for a so-called “special master” to examine papers collected by the FBI on August 8th, a 38-page document was submitted on August 30th. The former president “lacks standing to seek court remedy or oversight… because such records do not belong to him,” according to prosecutors.
Attorney-client privilege no longer protects Mr. Trump because he is not the president, according to prosecutors, who also stated that a “filter team” had already gone over the files to look for any information that might qualify.
