HERE ARE THE LATEST UPDATES OF THE MOVIE CALLED BASMA

The debut feature film “Basma,” directed by Saudi Arabian multihyphenate Fatima Al-Banawi, which addresses mental illness in her nation, is now available on Netflix.

The innovative movie takes place in Jeddah, which is the eastern shore of the Red Sea and the current host of Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival.

In addition to writing and directing “Basma,” Al Banawi, a Harvard graduate with a master’s degree in theological studies and a degree in psychology, plays the 26-year-old daughter of a guy who experiences paranoid delusions.

Before she is once more forced to part from her father, Basma attempts to stop her father’s spiralling mental instability after returning from the United States to Saudi Arabia.

When Mahmoud Sabbagh’s ground-breaking 2016 comedy “Barakah Meets Barakah” was chosen as Saudi Arabia’s international Oscar nominee and went to Berlin, Al-Banawi’s debut acting performance catapulted her into the international spotlight.

“Basma,” which has the backing of the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation, is a production of well-known Egyptian screenwriter and producer Mohamed Hefzy (“Amira”) and producer Fatima Al-Banawi, under their respective Film Clinic and Alf Wad shingles. In 2024, the movie will be available on Netflix worldwide.

For the second year running, Netflix is showcasing its Because She Created programme at the Red Sea Film Festival. This campaign aims to highlight young Arab women who possess creativity and are presenting stories that challenge conventional wisdom.

In addition to Fatima AlBanaoui, the Because She Created lineup at Red Sea features Adwa Bader, the multihyphenate Saudi-American who will be starring in Netflix’s upcoming Saudi film “Naga,” a satirical thriller about a young Saudi woman who has been using drugs in the desert and has to get home before her father, who is known for punishing people, sets curfews.

Haya Abdelsalam is the lead and creative producer behind Netflix’s Kuwaiti series “Devil’s Advocate,” which is about a female lawyer.
