At least 17 people were killed by a Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia overnight that hit apartment complexes, according to a top official in the Ukrainian city on Sunday.

According to Anatoliy Kurtev, secretary of the city council, rockets targeted the city overnight, damaging about 40 homes and destroying at least five private residences. Numerous casualties were reported by the Ukrainian military, who officially acknowledged the strike.

The attack comes after a Saturday blast partially collapsed a bridge connecting the Crimean Peninsula with Russia, disrupting a crucial supply route for the Kremlin’s waning war campaign in southern Ukraine and hitting a colossal representation of Russian authority in the area.

Zaporizhzhia, which is in the portion of the area controlled by Ukraine and annexed by Russia last week in defiance of international law, has been hit regularly in recent weeks.

THE LARGEST NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN EUROPE, ZAPORIZHZHIA, IS LOCATED IN A PORTION OF THE AREA THAT RUSSIA CURRENTLY CONTROLS:

Fighting has frequently put it in danger, and recent shelling has caused it to lose its last remaining external power supply, according to the UN nuclear watchdog on Saturday. It is currently dependent on backup diesel generators.

The Crimea bridge attack has not yet been assigned a perpetrator, but it dealt Russia a serious blow and raised the possibility of further escalation.

Instead of using the term “special military operation,” which has minimised the scale of the combat to ordinary Russians, some MPs in Russia are urging Putin to proclaim a counterterrorism operation.

The FSB, Russia’s federal security force, was given command of the endeavour by Putin, who signed an order late on Saturday night increasing security for the bridge and for energy infrastructure connecting Crimea and Russia.

The head of the air force, Gen. Sergei Surovikin, will now oversee all Russian forces in Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry stated hours after the explosion.

Surovikin led Russian forces in Syria and was charged with ordering a bombardment that obliterated much of Aleppo. This summer, Surovikin was given command of the military forces in southern Ukraine.

A crucial connection to the peninsula that Russia took from Ukraine in 2014 is the 19-kilometer (12-mile) Kerch Bridge, which spans a strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

Russia’s military activities in southern Ukraine depend on the USD 3.6 billion, longest bridge in Europe. 2018 saw the opening of the bridge under Putin’s personal leadership.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, addressed the bridge bombing in a televised message but did not directly address its cause.

On the area of our state, he added, today wasn’t too horrible and was primarily sunny. In Crimea, it was, regrettably, cloudy. However, it was also warm.

ZELENSKYY CLAIMS THAT UKRAINE DESIRES AN INDEPENDENT FUTURE. ALL AROUND OUR NATION, BUT ESPECIALLY IN CRIMEA:

Zelenskyy further stated that Ukrainian forces gained or held the line in the east and south, but acknowledged extremely difficult, extremely difficult fighting in the vicinity of the city of Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region, where recent gains by Russian forces have been asserted.

The bridge was temporarily closed to both train and vehicle traffic. According to Sergey Aksyonov, the head of Crimea supported by Russia, automobile traffic resumed on one of the two links that was still in place on Saturday afternoon, with the flow alternating in each direction.

Resuming slowly was rail traffic. On Saturday evening, two passenger trains departed from the Crimean cities of Simferopol and Sevastopol and travelled in the direction of the bridge. Sunday saw the resumption of passenger ferry service between the Russian mainland and Crimea.

Despite the fact that Russia established a land corridor to it along the Sea of Azov after seizing territory north of Crimea early in its invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine is waging a counteroffensive to retake that region. The Zaporizhzhia region is a part of that seaside Russian territory.

A Russian naval installation is located on the Crimean Peninsula, a renowned tourist destination for Russians. On Saturday, according to a Russian tourist organisation, there were 50,000 visitors in Crimea.
