Adnan Syed Updates: Here Is The Latest World News Update Today About: All charges against Adnan Syed in the Serial Podcast Case have been dropped.
Adnan Syed, who was recently released from jail after having his murder conviction in the case that served as the inspiration for the renowned podcast Serial, overturned, has had all charges against him dropped by Baltimore prosecutors.
Since murder cases are not subject to a statute of limitations, Syed may still be retried, depending on what Baltimore state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby decides.
However, Tuesday’s ruling guarantees that he won’t be taken back into custody anytime soon, if at all. Meanwhile, the police have reported that they are pursuing promising leads that could implicate additional suspects.
Only eight days remained for the state to declare whether it would retry Syed shortly or, at the very least, suspend the case.
After concluding that police withheld defense-friendly material, a circuit court judge overturned Syed’s conviction on September 19.
Syed was granted early release from prison by Judge Melissa Phinn, but he was not completely free; he was required to continue living under house arrest and to be tracked by a GPS device. Syed can now reintegrate into society after the accusations against him were dropped on Tuesday.
AFTER KILLING HIS HIGH SCHOOL GIRLFRIEND HAE MIN LEE IN 1999, SYED, 41, WAS SENTENCED TO MORE THAN 20 YEARS IN JAIL:
In February 2000, a jury found him guilty of killing Lee, but he has always maintained his innocence.
Theories that Lee had been murdered by someone other than Syed seemed to be supported by the hidden evidence.
Authorities have refrained from concluding that Syed is not guilty of killing Lee, notwithstanding the dismissal of the charges.
If additional tests reveal that the DNA used in the investigation into Lee’s murder is inconclusive or can be traced to “two other candidates,” Mosby has reportedly stated that she will “certify” Syed’s innocence, according to WJZ.
The state is still in a position to pursue the prosecution if it turns out to be Adnan Syed, she added. Otherwise, Mosby has stated she will accept the fact that he is genuinely innocent—a crucial legal distinction—and that his conviction was erroneous.
THE BALTIMORE SUN RECEIVED A CONFIRMATION FROM SYED’S ATTORNEY, ERICA SUTER, THAT THE CASE HAD BEEN DROPPED:
After Serial was published in 2014, Syed and Lee’s names spread across the country.
Syed’s longtime supporter Rabia Chaudry’s book Adnan’s Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After Serial and the 2019 HBO documentary series The Case Against Adnan Syed have called into doubt the validity of Syed’s conviction in the case.
