According To Zelenskyy, Russia Is Boosting The Nuclear Arms Race:
To oppose Russian efforts to use energy as a weapon, Zelenskyy also urged Qatar to enhance its natural gas production.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the Doha Forum on Saturday that Russia’s nuclear weapons “bragging” is fueling a hazardous arms race.
Mr. Zelenskyy also urged Qatar, which hosts the annual summit of world leaders, to boost natural gas output to oppose Russian efforts to use energy as a weapon.
Mr. Zelenskyy remarked in a live video message to the forum on the 31st day of Russia’s military assault against his country, “They are bragging that they can destroy with nuclear weapons not only a certain country but the entire planet.”
In statements translated into English for the conference, he stated that when Ukraine removed its nuclear stockpile in the 1990s, it received “security assurances” from the world’s most powerful countries, including Russia.
“However, these commitments never materialized into guarantees. And, in reality, one of the countries that was supposed to provide one of the most significant security guarantees began working against Ukraine, which is the pinnacle of unfairness,” Mr. Zelenskyy continued.
Because of the turmoil, Mr. Zelenskyy also urged Qatar, one of the world’s top three natural gas producers, to boost output.
“Your actions will determine the destiny of Europe,” he told the gathering, which included Qatar’s Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
“It is contingent on your production.” I request that you enhance energy output so that everyone in Russia understands that energy cannot be used as a weapon.”
European countries have pledged to wean themselves off of Russian oil and gas, and have already looked to Qatar for supplies.
Following a visit by German ministers, Qatar announced last week that Germany has committed to building two massive facilities to accept liquefied gas from the Gulf state.
